Twin Lakes, a small, cozy and yet spectacular hide-out, offers the visitor to Lake
County an incredible experience. Only 2.5 hours from Denver and located just 18
miles south of Leadville, Twin Lakes makes a great stop over for anyone who wants
the "real-deal" on Colorado high country life. The Lakes of Twin Lakes are the
largest glacier lakes in Colorado and their beauty has attracted tourists,
sportsmen and outdoorsmen since first "discovered" in the 1860's. During the
mining boom days, Twin Lakes was a prestigious "resort" area for the many high
rollers from Leadville and other mining towns, as well as hosting many dignitaries
from back east, and write-ups about the summer picnics held in the area for "high
society socialites" appear throughout older newspaper articles of the times.
Twin Lakes is a National Historic Site, surrounded by 14,000 foot peaks, including
Mt. Elbert to the north, the highest mountain in Colorado. The charming Twin
Lakes Village and historical Interlaken Hotel, along with access to the Colorado
Trail for hiking and mountain biking, (and certainly the excellent fishing) make
Twin Lakes one of the more charming tourist destinations in the area.
