The money, provided over five years, will pay for staff and services at nine Cincinnati schools to strengthen and expand after-school programs, such as tutoring, adult literacy and wellness programs. he Ohio Department of Education is awarding the money as part of the 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant program, which aims to build stronger schools where students and their families continue to learn after the school day ends. Cincinnati Public Schools and the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati jointly applied for the grant money. The idea of creating community-learning centers is the centerpiece of the school district’s nearly $1 billion school construction program.
Each school is looking to build partnerships that enhance student learning and promote parental involvement. The grant money will pay for a resource coordinator at each school who can coordinate services and assess their effectiveness. The community learning center concept helps schools and community partners provide services in an organized and strategic manner to impact student performance, said Jorge Perez, associate vice president of the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati. Such a coordinated effort eliminates redundancy i.
